What is Sport Psychology?
Beyond the Sport
and
Into the Athlete
What is Sport Psychology?

Sport Psychology is the application of psychological
principles and techniques to assist athletes in
developing fundamental athletic skills and enhancing
performance in competitive situations.

Sport psychologists help athletes increase their
chances of achieving peak performance using
techniques for injury prevention, stress
management, arousal control, and motivation.  Sport
psychologists also educate individuals on proper
workout techniques, efficiency skills, and
appropriate nutrition for optimal performance.

Why Sport Psychology?

The application of sport psychology techniques can
aid in the acquisition, development, and
performance of fundamental athletic skills.

By working on improving performance and
consistency in all facets of athletics, athletes derive
greater enjoyment of their sport and increase their
chances of experiencing peak performances.

For athletes experiencing performance difficulties,
sport psychology can help to resolve difficulties and
get the athlete back on track.

Who benefits from Sport Psychology?

Children – Sport psychology can aid in the
development of self confidence, giving children a
greater sense of self efficacy and motivation to
invest their energy into meaningful goals.

Adolescents – Sport psychology emphasizes goal
setting techniques, anxiety management, and self-
control, which are all vital to this challenging stage
of development.

Adults – No matter what the athletic ability, sport
psychologists can tailor treatment plans to meet the
specific needs of each client.  Treatment goals may
include weight loss, performance improvement,
exercise reintegration, or improving one’s “mental
game.”
